No axe, no tree
Loggers now need an axe from the camp rack, the start camp grew to twelve settlers, and haulers deliver to whoever is short.
Yesterday the people models learned to carry an axe on their back. Today it matters: a logger can no longer fell a tree with his bare hands.
The logging camp now keeps a rack of axes. A logger takes one before he fells a tree and keeps it. If the rack is empty, no tree is felled, which is exactly as strict as it sounds. Builders borrow a spare axe when they need to fell a marked tree and bring it back afterwards. The haulers keep the rack full and keep count of the axes that are out.
Then I played the start, and it did not work. Eight settlers could not staff everything: the loggers, the haulers, the builders. So the camp grew to twelve settlers in six tents, with six axes, and the tents now last five days instead of three. Eight people were simply too few to get a town going.
The haulers learned something too. When a hauler lifts an output, it first looks for a building or a building site that is short of that item and brings it straight there. Only when nobody is short does it go to the stockpile. That sounds obvious, and I am a little embarrassed it was not like this from the start.
On the side I have been trying to make sound effects, and that did not go well. The Suno clips were weak, and the ones I synthesised with my own code were worse. The plan now is real CC0 recordings from freesound.
